Allergy
Allergy is a physiological reaction caused when the immune system mistakenly identifies a normally harmless substance as damaging to the body. Normally, the human body defends itself against harmful substances, such as viruses or bacteria, but sometimes the defenses aggressively attack usually innocuous substances, such as dust, mold, or pollen.
Although hundreds of ordinary substances could trigger allergic reactions, the most common triggers-called allergens-include:
- Pollens
- Molds
- Household dust, dust mites and their waste
- Animal protein (dander, urine, oil from skin)
In a person with allergies, the immune system is oversensitive. When it recognizes an allergen, it releases chemicals such as histamines that fight off the allergen. Allergic rhinitis, hay fever, coughing and sneezing can all cause serious problems in the ears, mouth, nose and throat. Doctors William Hofmann, Michael Anderson and David Rowe can care for allergy sufferers of all ages by providing allergy evaluations, testing and immunotherapy (both injection therapy and sublingual therapy).
Audiology
Hearing loss is the third most common health condition in the United States, and more than 31 million Americans have some type of hearing problem. Audiologist Lori Fish uses the latest technology to determine the type and degree, if any, of your hearing loss. She can assist with individualized hearing aid fitting, recreational and occupational ear molds, and hearing aid repairs.
