ImPACT Concussion Screening

The Best Approach to Concussion Management
ImPACT™ provides computerized neurocognitive assessment tools and services that are used by coaches, athletic trainers, doctors, and other health professionals to assist them in determining an athlete’s fitness to return to play after suffering a concussion. It is the first, most-widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system.

Why should athletes take the test?
Given the inherent difficulties in concussion management, it is important to manage concussions on an individualized basis and to implement baseline testing and/or post-injury neurocognitive testing. This type of concussion assessment can help to objectively evaluate the concussed athlete’s post-injury condition and track recovery for safe return to play, thus preventing the cumulative effects of the head injury. In fact, neurocognitive testing has recently been called the “cornerstone” of proper concussion management by an international panel of sports medicine experts.

What is tested?
• Measures player symptoms
• Measures verbal and visual memory, processing speed and reaction time
• Reaction time measured to 1/100th of second
• Assists clinicians and athletic trainers in making difficult return-to-play decisions
• Provides reliable baseline test information
• Produces comprehensive report of test results
• Results can be e-mailed or faxed for fast consultation by a neuropsychologist
• Automatically stores data from repeat testing
• Testing is istered online for individuals or groups

The test battery consists of a near infinite number of alternate forms by randomly varying the stimulus array for each istration. This feature was built in to the program to minimize the “practice effects” that have limited the usefulness of more traditional neurocognitive tests.

The program measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning in athletes, including:

• Attention span
• Working memory
• Sustained and selective attention time
• Response variability
• Non-verbal problem solving
• Reaction time

Taking the Test
Anyone can take the test though it is highly recommended for individuals participating in athletics. For the test to be effective, individuals must be at least five years of age. It is not necessary to be a native English speaker. ImPACT™ takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and is done at a computer.

To schedule a testing period, contact Fort HealthCare’s Therapy & Sport Center for an appointment. The cost of the test can be funded through most flex spending plans.

Individual Test $15
Groups of 10 or more (per person) $10
Costs are subject to change.

How it is useful
Prior to a concussion, individuals can take the baseline test which will establish that person’s normal score on the ImPACT™ test. Should a concussion occur, the ImPACT™ can be re-istered to assist medical providers in making return-to-play decisions. Once scores return to a normal range, the athlete can once again resume play. The baseline test eliminates the guesswork and helps coaches, parents, athletes and clinicians make decisions that are in the best interest of the athlete. Further, if the athlete’s family practice physician is associated with a different healthcare organization, Fort HealthCare’s doctors will work closely with that provider to ensure proper care of the injured athlete.

Prevention
Although no child is injury proof, parents can take some simple steps to keep their children from getting head injuries.
