First annual Camp 911 a success

Monday, June 27, 2011

Fort HealthCare's inaugural Camp 911, was held on Monday, June 20 at Fort Memorial Hospital for 10 to 12 year old students. Camp 911 was a one-day program focusing on safety, prevention techniques and increasing awareness of health and wellness.

This interactive event gave participants the opportunity to learn CPR and first aid from Dawn Blanton, Fort HealthCare’s AHA Training Center Coordinator as well as bicycle safety provided by Fort HealthCare employees Mary Daubert, RN and pharmacist Chris Barron.

Students learned about fire safety, toured a fire truck and tried on firefighting equipment, courtesy of the Whitewater Fire Department. Dispatcher Lance Shanahan engaged participants in a discussion about when and how to call 911 and deputy Dennis Griffee from the Jefferson County Sheriff Department gave tips on seat belt, gun and internet safety. The campers also learned about emergency medical services and toured an ambulance provided by Ryan Brothers Ambulance and met lieutenant Scott Gukich of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office K-9 Unit and his K-9, Mink.

Participants also learned about health and wellness through a nutrition presentation from Fort HealthCare registered dietician, Stephanie Nischik and practiced creative exercise techniques in team relay races and activities. The day wrapped up with an activity fair, which included decorating t-shirts, planting seeds and building a first aid kit. Kati Wetzel, RN and Camp 911organizer said, “The purpose of this event was to give children the skills and confidence they need to protect themselves and react safely in emergency situations; also helps them focus on health and wellness in their daily lives. With the help of the participating community agencies, we achieved that goal and look forward to offering this again next year.”
